This photo is one of quite a few I took of my daughter's dogs playing in the surf with the setting sun behind them. I wanted to get some silhouette type shots with the water spray coming up. Now I'm not sure if I needed more detail in the dogs and whether the spray messes up the silhouettes. What do you think?

I tend to agree with Gaye on this one, and like the wider crop with the landscape waves. While I like the close crop, I think the white border encroaching on the picture accentuates the spray. (i.e. the white border makes the spray mess it up, whereas Gaye's no border focuses on the dogs)

Ohh well! Back to the drawing board. I did try what Gaye did as I figured that if I wanted a silhouette I should darken the image but I didn't like it so lightened the image which I like better but uit didn't still gel.
Perhaps I should have got my nose in the sand and taken the shots lower down and got more sun behind them. They weren't exactly listening to me at the time about where I wanted them to pose.

Hey - you've caught the joy of the moment. In this sort of situation there's not a lot in your control. I love the shot, feel like I'm right there (without getting wet and sandy). Try no cropping - just go with your initial impulse shot, your reaction to the scene; sometimes that is the best interpretation.

Actually, I like what you have done here Ross. The crop and additional work is excellent and makes it a very powerful and dramatic image that one can go back to and get something new each time. I would put this one on my wall rather than the original.

Valuable comment David. I'd forgotten that excellent measuring stick - would I put it on my wall.
