STOP!
A depth of field question

Description : To me there seems to have been a lot of talk lately towards making photos 'sharp'. As such, my first impression of this photo was that his face should be sharp and in focus. But as I look at it more, I'm intrigued that while my eye is drawn to his face which is out of focus, the photo then screams STOP! at the sign and the hand rather than looking further into the photo. Hoping that makes sense, what do other people think?

First it's useless trying to sharpen what was photographed out of focus. The hand looks most in focus to me, whih would have been decided by your depth of field/F stop. I personally would have liked the visually dominant Stop sign in focus (if using selective focus) or the sign, face and hand in focus otherwise.

Sorry - I thought it was automatically putting my name as I was logged in at the time.
I haven't tried to sharpen anything in this photo.

To me, the stop sign and the hand are equally in focus. Odd combination which is why I am questioning it.

The depth of field seems to go from his hand to the middle of his chest and then drops off quite quickly and is quite soft by the time it gets to his face. The expression on the face is abig part of the image so it does give you a problem.

Apologies, Tamara. Even though you asked "a depth of field question", I misunderstood your original sharpness issue. Thought it was about "making" sharpness (with Pshop etc) rather than taking sharpness (DOF). I only perceive his left hand (and bit of jacket) as sharp.
